The Sharpeners

The silent treatment of a different kind

Of late I have been fascinated by the rapid evolution of “AI coaches” and have personally benefited from their remarkable access to the kind of vast stores of knowledge that most humans can only dream of. Yet, even as AI coaching technology advances, there remains a distinctive area where human coaches continue to hold a unique advantage: the intentional use of silence.

A human coach may choose to remain silent after you, the client, have finished speaking, whereas most AI coaches today tend to respond immediately with information or feedback. While AI platforms are beginning to experiment with reflective pauses and more nuanced conversational pacing, the artful deployment of silence remains a hallmark of skilled human coaching.

The silence a human coach chooses can impact you in profound ways.

Many of my clients have shared that it’s the first time in ages they’ve been able to speak freely and uninterrupted for such a long stretch. The coach’s silence signals that you deserve to speak as much as you need to. It’s an acceptance that whatever you are saying and thinking is okay; you are okay. It conveys that your thoughts, however raw or unformed, are valid and welcome. You can be vulnerable here. You are not being judged. This is a safe space. Take all the time you need. This is a space for you to process your thoughts and emotions by yourself.

The coach’s silence empowers you to take more ownership of the conversation, leading to unexpected shifts in direction and the emergence of new insights—insights that arise from within, rather than being supplied by the coach.

This silence is helpful in many ways. Half-formed ideas coalesce, hidden insights surface, confusion gradually turns into clarity, and overwhelm gives way to ease, or brings forward something that was lying dormant at the back of your mind. It enables you to explore your challenges without fear of evaluation.

Of course, silence can also be uncomfortable. You might wonder: Did I make sense? Have I said too much? Are you now going to give me a solution to what I’m grappling with? Staying with the discomfort of silence is revealing. It gives you a chance to self-realize what you just said, to find the meaning of your words on your own, to become aware of what those words made you feel. It can prompt you to confront underlying anxieties or unspoken needs. Sometimes, this discomfort signals you are on the verge of a breakthrough or confronting a limiting belief. Silence provides a necessary respite, allowing you to consolidate information and generate your own connections.

The coach is silent, but not absent. Attentive silence from the coach signals respect for your internal process, allowing you to lead the exploration and discover your own answers. This is a testament to the power of silence in empowering you to take full ownership of your narrative. It shifts the dynamic from a question-and-answer exchange to a deeper, client-led exploration, where you have autonomy and self-reliance.

AI coaches, especially the ones I have encountered so far, tend to operate on principles of immediate response, which can sometimes keep the coaching process more transactional and miss out on the potential of silence in fostering deeper reflection and self-discovery.

However, it’s exciting to see that some AI coaching platforms are beginning to incorporate features such as reflective pauses, open-ended prompts, and more personalized pacing. As AI continues to evolve, it may one day be able to replicate aspects of this powerful silence.

There is also the aspect of validation. I’ve noticed that AI often starts its responses with phrases like “that’s a good question” or “you make a good point.” While this can be encouraging, a skilled human coach will usually acknowledge your insights neutrally and steer away from giving compliments or other forms of validation, helping you stay focused on your own exploration.

Constant verbal input, whether from a human or AI, can sometimes lead to cognitive overload, making it harder to process your own thoughts. The deliberate use of silence, on the other hand, can create the space necessary for deeper processing and reflection.

The skillful deployment of silence is an art, rooted in human empathy, intuition, and the ability to read nuanced non-verbal cues. It’s about holding space, trusting the client’s inner wisdom, and allowing the client’s own solutions to emerge. While AI is making impressive strides and will quite likely emulate these qualities soon, for now, the human coach’s silence remains a powerful and irreplaceable asset in the coaching journey. That’s one silent treatment you want to sign up for.
